Iron and Steel
Steel making. Train travelling to Consett Iron and Steel Works, pulling bogies loaded with containers of hot blast furnace iron from blast furnaces in Cleveland. This hot iron was used to supplement Consett's blast furnace iron for use in the LD steel making plant. The containers were known as Torpedoes. 4/8/69. South Pelaw Junction.
